It is not every day that you can review a great horror film, which is worthy of the name. Usually we deal with short films that are able to highlight the skill of the director or the ability of the single but this time we did more, we were able to contact Andrèa Winter, actress of the film Blood Paradise and we were able to have the opportunity to interview her in Italian exclusive.
Blood Paradise is a horror film directed by Patrick von Barkenberg and masterfully played by Andrèa Winter in the guise of a writer looking for inspiration for her new book at an accommodation in Sweden. However, the choice of the protagonist will prove to be wrong soon. But I would not want to ruin the plot, I can only confirm that the film I saw is a great visual product and rich in content. Ideas are good for laying the foundations that have been lacking in international horror movies for years. We were orphans of Leatherface, Friday 13 and American Gothic; now Andrèa Winter wants to bring us back to hope for a cult series of horror cinema and I'm sure her will succeed.

1) Where did the idea for Blood Paradise come from?
We spent a lot of time on our family farm in Norrland (North of Sweden). It's a beautiful but strangely melancholic place full of secrets and folklore. It's quiet. Very very quiet. Not much to do but go fishing and staring at the fire. We love mysteries and Detective movies: Hitchcock, Polanski, de Palma, Midsomer Murders. Anything that's cozy and creepy. One evening we were sitting by the fire overlooking the lake and we saw a farmer walk into his barn and cover the windows with a tarp. It all started there...
2) The Story could continue, cause i think that Blood Paradise could become a little cult...
Thank you. That would be wonderful. Some of the characters can definitely go on. Robin Richards can travel all over the world and have all kinds of adventures. Also, the character of the Gypsy cab driver "Hans Bubi" was a lot of fun to create. He should have his own show "Just call Bubi".
3) Andrea Winter is a great actress. How about nudity? I think that is more realistic cause in each horror we treat adult themes.
That is very kind of you. We don't have problems with nudity in Sweden. That's how we are born.
4) What was the budget for Blood paradise?
It's priceless. We spent A LOT of time working on it without getting paid. We also did most of the below the line jobs ourselves. Costume, production design etc. We didn't have any assistants. This movie was truly made by only a handful of people. But that's what it takes. Nobody could have done it for us. If you have a dream you have a duty to see it through, otherwise, you're just a dreamer.

5) How long has the production lasted?
We wrote the script in 2-3 weeks and filmed it very quickly after. Two weeks in Sweden and three days in Spain.
Post-production took a long time. We had tons of great footage. The original cut was three hours long. We had to cut a lot of great material, including two of our favorite scenes because they clashed tonally with the rest of the movie.
6)Did you expect the film to be welcomed with this success?
We are happy and grateful. We always knew that Blood Paradise is not for everybody but so far the reactions have been very kind.
7)There are some really comical moments that break the tension. Patrick von Barkenberg did a great job. Where did you take the inspiration to characterize these characters?
That's how we see the world. Real life is already dark and disturbing. It's healthy to have a little chuckle after a good scare.
8)At the beginning your film reminds me of "The People Under the Stairs by Wes Craven" (in the initial scene where the boyfriend is dressed in leather) and then became American Gothic. How big is the influence of the old and unfortunately lost vintage horror style?
Stylistically we were influenced by Hitchcock, Brian de Palma and Pedro Almodovar. And we love Dario Argento. We like to paint in bold primary colors. That being said, we were both born in the 80s and grew up with Wes Craven and John Carpenter.
9)In the film I liked the cinematography and detailed editing. Also the way you introduce the characters. You managed to do a horror without needing an excess of night scenes. This is also an excellent goal, do not you think?
We are happy you appreciated it. We love the cinematography and our great cinematographer Thomas Rist. He's old school and really helped us to achieve a classic vintage look. We were very disciplined to do everything in camera and made sure that the color palette of costumes and sets and the lenses and filters were working for our story. The movie was shot in July in the North of Sweden. During that time, the sun does not set for more than half an hour. So we had to squeeze the few night sequences into a very short window at the end of the shoot when the sun was setting for about three hours.

10)What was the most complicated scene to shoot?
Two scenes.The first was a crazy sexy nightmare that Robin has when she arrives in Sweden. It involved gallons of fake blood, two naked actors and a live chicken. The scene was cut because it was too dark and disturbing and clashed with the overall tone. But we might put it on the Blue Ray.The second scene is the last shot of the movie, with the flock of thirteen sheep in the sunset that stumbles upon the last page of Robin's book. It took a long time to get these amazing creatures to enter and exit frame at the perfect moment.
11) After viewing the film I had three sensations:
a) Andréa Winter alone is worth the price of the ticket

c) The film will have a following because it traces the liveliness of the horror (real) of the 80s that had been missing for years.What do you think of these statements?
We are happy you think so. We tried to make the best movie we could within our limitations. Now it doesn't belong to us anymore. It's for the audience to decide where to take it. (and we hope they take it to the moon.)
Non capita tutti i giorni di poter recensire un ottimo film horror, che sia degno di tale nome. Di solito ci occupiamo di cortometraggi che riescono a mettere in luce la bravura del regista o la capacità del singolo ma stavolta abbiamo fatto di più, siamo riusciti a contattare Andrèa Winter, attrice del film Blood Paradise e siamo riusciti ad avere la possibilità di intervistarla in esclusiva italiana.
Blood Paradise è un film horror diretto da Patrick von Barkenberg e magistralmente interpretato da Andrèa Winter nelle vesti di una scrittrice in cerca di ispirazione per il suo nuovo libro presso un alloggio in Svezia. Tuttavia la scelta della protagonista si rivelerà ben presto sbagliata. Ma non vorrei rovinarvi la trama, posso solo confermare che il film che ho visto è un ottimo prodotto visivo e ricco di contenuti. Le idee sono buone per gettare le basi che da anni mancano al cinema horror internazionale. Siamo rimasti orfani di Leatherface, Friday 13 ed American Gothic; adesso Andrèa Winter vuole riportarci a sperare in una serie cult del cinema horror e sono certo che ci riuscirà.

1) Da dove nasce l'idea di Blood Paradise?
Abbiamo trascorso molto tempo nella nostra fattoria di famiglia a Norrland (nel nord della Svezia). È un posto bellissimo ma stranamente malinconico pieno di segreti e folclore. È tranquillo. Molto molto tranquillo. Non c'è molto da fare se non andare a pescare e fissare il fuoco. Amiamo i misteri e i film polizieschi: Hitchcock, Polanski, de Palma, Midsomer Murders. Tutto ciò che è accogliente e inquietante. Una sera eravamo seduti accanto al fuoco che dominava il lago e vedemmo un contadino entrare nel suo granaio e coprire le finestre con un telo. Tutto è iniziato lì ...
2) La storia potrebbe avere un seguito, penso che Blood Paradise potrebbe diventare un piccolo cult ...
Grazie. Sarebbe meraviglioso. Alcuni personaggi possono sicuramente andare avanti. Robin Richards può viaggiare in tutto il mondo e avere ogni tipo di avventura. Inoltre, il personaggio del tassista Gypsy "Hans Bubi" è stato molto divertente da creare. Dovrebbe avere il suo spettacolo "Basta chiamare Bubi".
3) Andrea Winter sei stata divina. Che ne dici della nudità nel film? Penso che molto realistica poichè in un film horror trattiamo temi per adulti.
È molto gentile da parte tua. Non abbiamo problemi con la nudità in Svezia. È così che nasciamo.
4) Qual era il budget per il paradiso del Sangue?
È impagabile Abbiamo passato molto tempo a lavorarci senza essere pagati. Abbiamo anche fatto la maggior parte dei lavori sotto la linea. Costume, scenografia ecc. Non avevamo assistenti. Questo film è stato realizzato da solo poche persone. Ma questo è quello che serve. Nessuno avrebbe potuto farlo per noi. Se hai un sogno, hai il dovere di vederlo, altrimenti sei solo un sognatore.
5) Per quanto tempo è durata la produzione?
Abbiamo scritto la sceneggiatura in 2-3 settimane e l'abbiamo ripresa molto rapidamente dopo. Due settimane in Svezia e tre giorni in Spagna.
La post-produzione ha richiesto molto tempo. Abbiamo avuto tonnellate di filmati eccezionali. Il taglio originale era lungo tre ore. Abbiamo dovuto tagliare un sacco di materiale eccezionale, incluse due delle nostre scene preferite perché si sono scontrati a tinte piatte con il resto del film.
6) Ti aspettavi che il film fosse accolto con questo successo?
Siamo felici e grati. Abbiamo sempre saputo che Blood Paradise non è per tutti ma finora le reazioni sono state molto gentili.
7) Ci sono alcuni momenti davvero comici che rompono la tensione. Patrick von Barkenberg ha fatto un ottimo lavoro. Dove hai preso l'ispirazione per caratterizzare questi personaggi?
È così che vediamo il mondo. La vita reale è già oscura e inquietante. È salutare avere una risatina dopo un buon spavento.
8) All'inizio il tuo film mi ricorda "La casa nera di Wes Craven" (nella scena iniziale in cui il fidanzato è vestito di pelle) e poi è diventato American Gothic. Quanto è grande l'influenza del vecchio e sfortunato stile horror vintage?
Stilisticamente siamo stati influenzati da Hitchcock, Brian de Palma e Pedro Almodovar. E adoriamo Dario Argento. Ci piace dipingere in grassetto colori primari. Detto questo, siamo entrambi nati negli anni '80 e cresciuti con Wes Craven e John Carpenter.
9) Nel film mi è piaciuta la fotografia e il montaggio dettagliato. Anche il modo in cui presenti i personaggi. Sei riuscita a fare un horror senza bisogno di un eccesso di scene notturne. Anche questo è un obiettivo eccellente, non credi?
Siamo felici che tu l'abbia apprezzato. Amiamo la cinematografia e il nostro grande direttore della fotografia Thomas Rist. È una vecchia scuola e ci ha davvero aiutato a ottenere un look vintage classico. Siamo stati molto disciplinati a fare tutto a porte chiuse e abbiamo fatto in modo che la tavolozza dei colori di costumi e set e le lenti ei filtri lavorassero per la nostra storia. Il film è stato girato a luglio nel nord della Svezia. Durante quel tempo, il sole non tramonta per più di mezz'ora. Quindi abbiamo dovuto spremere le poche sequenze notturne in una finestra molto corta alla fine delle riprese quando il sole stava tramontando per circa tre ore.
10) Qual è stata la scena più complicata da girare?
Due scene. La prima è stata un pazzo incubo sexy che Robin ha quando arriva in Svezia. Coinvolgeva galloni di sangue finto, due attori nudi e un pollo vivo. La scena è stata tagliata perché era troppo buio e disturbante e si è scontrata con il tono generale. Ma potremmo metterlo sul Blue Ray. La seconda scena è l'ultima ripresa del film, con il gregge di tredici pecore al tramonto che inciampa nell'ultima pagina del libro di Robin. Ci è voluto molto tempo per far entrare queste fantastiche creature e uscire dal frame nel momento perfetto.
11) Dopo aver visto il film ho avuto tre sensazioni:
a) Andréa Winter vale il prezzo del biglietto
È molto gentile da parte tua.
b) Finalmente un horror senza bambole che parlano
Siamo d'accordo.
c) Il film avrà un seguito perché ricorda gli horror degli anni '80 che mancavano da tanti anni. Cosa ne pensi di queste affermazioni?
Siamo felici che tu pensi così. Abbiamo cercato di realizzare il miglior film possibile nei nostri limiti. Ora non ci appartiene più. Spetta al pubblico decidere dove prenderlo. (e speriamo che lo portino sulla luna.)
